“I’ve never spent a night in jail...because I obey the law.”

Mr. Sefolosha had not broken the law, either. That’s why New York City had to pay him $4m dollars.

Maybe, maybe not.

Your linke reads:

In his statement, Mr. Paolucci said: “This settlement is not a concession that Mr. Sefolosha was blameless in this matter and there was no admission of liability by the defendants, but in light of the gravity of his injuries, the potential impact on his career as a professional athlete and the challenge for a jury in sorting out the facts in this incident, the resolution of the case was in the best interests of the city.”

According to court papers, the parties reached an agreement after Judge Jesse M. Furman of Federal District Court in Manhattan proposed a settlement amount at the end of a conference on March 30. Judge Furman officially dismissed the case on Wednesday.

It sounds to me that they figured $4 million paid out now was better than gambling on a possible $20 million+ settlement later

Not what it says:

“This settlement is not a concession that Mr. Sefolosha was blameless in this matter and there was no admission of liability by the defendants, but in light of the gravity of his injuries, the potential impact on his career as a professional athlete and the challenge for a jury in sorting out the facts in this incident, the resolution of the case was in the best interests of the city.”
