Yan Liben (AD 600673) came from a family of government officials and succeeded his brother, Yan Lide, as minister of public works. Yan Liben was also imperial architect under Emperor Gaozong. The art is ink with some color. There's a feel of caricatures in both the art and the music, and he creates absolutely marvelous portraits of non-Chinese coming to pay tribute to the emperor.

Very nice.
Thanks, Aqua. I got a few videos of Joe day before yesterday. Will get around to getting them up. I told him to name one of his new pieces Aquamarine.
Let me know when you get them up. Aquamarine would make a good title to a song, so would Mairdie’s Theme. ;)
So the big guy rides and the wife walks barefoot?
That kind of thinking is no longer allowed.
I assumed that was the main tribute bearer’s servant. Other paintings also show horses being led. And I would have bet that was a man, not a woman. If it had been a wife, at that time, I would have expected her to be riding in a covered palfry.
What I have been finding interesting is that women are depicted MUCH smaller than men, and the fashion in the video on which I’m now working, is to paint the forehead and the bridge of the nose bright white. What I haven’t figured out is what the societal status is of the women who DO paint themselves.
Oh that is so much fun, mairdie!
Love the music and the figures in the Tribute Parade! Thanks as always for sharing!
I love the feet! Thanks for looking!
I went back to study the feet! LOL! oh my goodness! What interesting foot configurations. Thanks for pointing that out.
