Friday Box Office: 'Dumbo' Disappoints, 'Unplanned' Surprises And 'Beach Bum' Bombs
Forbes ^ | March 30, 2019 | Scott Mendelson

Walt Disney's Dumbo (review) flew to the top of the box office on Friday, with "just" $15.318 million counting $2.6 million in Thursday previews. This may turn out to be a classic "rank doesn't matter" scenario, and not in a good way. 30 years ago, Tim Burton's Batman broke the opening weekend box office record with a then-unthinkable $43 million Fri-Sun debut, just one week after Ghostbusters II had broken that same record with $29 million. And now, in 2019, we're discussing whether a likely over/under $48 million launch for Dumbo is good enough. Yes, inflation is a thing and Dumbo cost $170 million to produce, but it's still interesting how standards have changed over the last three decades.

[snip]

Pure Flix's anti-abortion drama Unplanned (review) overperformed this weekend. Written and directed by Cary Solomon and Chuck Konzelman, the $6 million-budgeted flick, about a former Planned Parenthood clinic director turned anti-abortion activist, earned $2.72 million on Friday, setting the stage for a likely $7.25 million debut weekend. If that holds up, then it'll be PureFlix's second-biggest opening weekend behind the $7.6 million launch of God's Not Dead 2 three years ago this weekend. That sequel earned $20 million domestic so we could see a similar result for the Abby Johnson biopic. That would be a big win, since most of the faith-based biggies still come from Sony and Lionsgate as opposed to the various small-scale distributors.

Unplanned is doing very well in its limited release with very minimal marketing. Many networks refused to air previews for the movie.

None of this is surprising.

A non animated Dumbo?

And of course Unplanned was advertised though one of the biggest agencies in the world.

The different Christian churches.

good.

most reviewers have not seen it , and those who gave negative reviews are laughable. https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/unplanned/reviews/

I heard some bad reviews for Dumbo, as to how it’s a dark story, not exactly something for children, and that some politically correct elements were thrown in as well.

The left always leaves negative reviews for conservative books and movies that they’ve never read/watched.

I saw ‘unplanned’. It is well done.

‘The mustang’ is good.

If Dumbo cost $170 million, then it needs to make at least $340 million just to break even IIRC.

Does anyone know if “Dumbo” is suitable for children?

Given its Disney pedigree, you have to wonder.

Wife and I saw "Unplanned" last night. It's very well produced and directed. Technically excellent film, and that' important. Too often, "Christian" films aren't.

I did not "enjoy" the film. The story it tell is horrific, disgusting, and outrageous. And it's a story that desperately needs to be told.

In 1930s and 1940s palefaced bureaucrats committed industrial scale mass murder.

In 1970s to the present America, slick dishonest salesmen are committing industrial scale mass murder.

In the first two weeks, the box office split between the movie theater and the studios is about 50/50. After that the studio share goes down.

One rule of thumb is that a movie needs to gross its production cost in the first two weeks in order to wind up showing a profit.

Went to see ‘Beach Bum’ because of the actors, etc. OMG it was a train wreck. Zero stars. Definitely a waste of film stock. Very few in the theater and half of those walked out.

And, RottenTomatos changed their site to favor Captain Marvel so it wouldn’t get negative press.

We’re going tonight. I hope the ambivalent and pro-choice crowd gets a chance to see it. Us pro-life types know the drill.

My beloved is on his way to see Unplanned.

It has 5 showings today and I’m assuming 5 showings tomorrow.

From reading the reviews: The Pro-Murder folks HATE this movie.
