I can remember walking the streets of Isla Vista, Cal. (outside of UC Santa Barbara) and hearing the Batman theme coming from what seemed like dozens of apartments. Only one channel in SB back then channel 3—ABC.

It is a great show. The guy who plays the Penguin nails it.

Robin Lord Taylor. And Penguin is gay! He has a ting for Riddler, who spurns his advances.

He is a flamer. But he absolutely nails the Penguin’s early character.

Donal Logue (Bullock) is the one experienced actor on the show, and you can see how he holds it together.

Surprisingly, I thought Jada Pinkett Smith did a good job too as a crime boss (Fish Mooney). I’d have to start binge-watching the show again, I watched the first six episodes and then got distracted by Russian Doll and Stranger Things.

The relationship between Fish and Bullock was hilarious. Daily corruption in action.

The actor who played Alfred in the TV series was named Alan Napier. Oddly, the Joker is Jack Napier.

But my favorite villain — other than every guy’s crush on Catwoman (Selena Kyle) — was Oswald Cobblebottom, AKA The Penguin. For one thing, I enjoyed Burgess Meredith’s portrayal of him,and for another thing, I think Penguin is smarter than the other villains (again, with the possible exception of Catwoman), and therefore more of a challenge for The Dynamic Duo.

Note that in the 1960s movie based on the TV series, where Joker, Riddler, Panguin, and Catwoman are all out and working together, Penguin functions as the head of the group.

That panel must be from Justice League of America.

Alfred is slowing dying of "MacGregor's Disease", though quite what this is is never made clear — possibly a desire to get back to good character roles with the Royal Shakespeare Company.

LOL! Steyn is always fantastic.
