I pulled my own scam to get into Yale lo these many (48!) years ago. I had blown my Harvard interview — sat there stiff as a board and couldn’t find my groove — so for my Yale interview the following week I got smart. I asked if the interviewer could come to my house (this was in California.) I told my mother when the guy came to let him in, tell him I was in the living room and then go upstairs. I turned off all the lights downstairs and lit a big fire in the fireplace. Spread out a mess of papers on the table in front the fire. Had Beethoven’s 7th Symphony blasting from the speakers high on the walls flanking the fire. Sat with my back to the door scribbling furiously on the papers, by firelight. When I heard the guy come in I held up my left hand, like, hang on a second, and kept scribbling, with great intensity — milked it as long as I could — and finally finished writing, turned and looked at the guy as if I was still lost in my thoughts, like, remind me while you’re here? All with the Beethoven blasting. I saw the look in the guy’s eyes and knew right then that I was going to New Haven. Seems like a pretty innocent scam by comparison...
