Shermans autobiography a long time ago and what I found interesting is he called the Confederates “Democrats”, for example “We went over the hill and found the Democrats ready for battle” Doh! Speaking of Grant I visited Grants tomb a few years ago in Manhattan and it was very moving. You walk in there and there’s one security guard sitting at a desk which is probably how it’s been since the late 1890s, and right there in the center you look down and there is him and his wife laying right next to each other in separate cement coffins, tombs, whatever they call it.
I had a great aunt from Missouri who hated some of her neighbors. When I asked her why she told me they were damned democrats.
It turned out her grandfather (my great great grandfather) had fought for the Union and her neighbor’s relatives had fought for the Confederates.
This was in the late 1960s. Bad blood had existed for over a hundred years.
