We have officially created a butt slide on this thread.

File that in your memory. May come in handy later.
Yes it does, I have an interesting DS players roster I'll post later.
Interesting a link works for you without HTML if you don't comment, I thought the only way to do a clickable link was to use HTML?
The Bonfire of the Vanities by Tom Wolfe
The French names west of the Mississippi came from the French missionaries, explorers and trappers before Napoleon sold the land to the US in 1804. Some names maybe came later; there would have been French still around long after we bought it. Americans who moved into these places totally botched the pronunciation, and that became the name of the town. St. Francois (france-wah) became St Francis, St. Louis (Loo-ee) became Lewis, etc.
The Spanish names are mostly from the Mexican-American War in 1846-8. Veterans would return from that war and name new towns after towns they had been to in Mexico. A lot of towns in Missouri were named that way. They also liked to name new towns after famous places from history. So you get towns like New Madrid (Mad-Drid), Cuba (Cuber), Lebanon, Mexico, Bolivar, Iberia, La Plata, etc.
Fun slide.
You mean like Pier South Dakota? Spelled Pierre. Pronounced Pier by South Dakotans!
That’s who I thought of immediately.

IDK
However, upon seeing that name, I would proceed to mispronounce based on my limited knowledge of Spanish.
Guess that’s why we need folks who know the particulars of colloquial language.
That has been discussed on FR for about two years
Yup, just like that. I knew a girl from there once, only way I knew that it was pronounced peer. She was cute, so I didn’t care how it was pronounced.
I have been fantasizing about just that for months.
Well I thought so, but when you get older, the line between knowing and knowing gets finer. The more you know!
Kek! I appreciate an honest man! :)
Or Maukie for Milwaukee.....
