Jason Witten will be on "Monday Night Football" again this season -- but not as an announcer.
Retirement didnt even last a year for the Dallas Cowboys star, who is returning to the gridiron a season after hanging up his cleats. The 2019 season will mark his 16th season with the Texas team.
The NFL team announced the news on Thursday afternoon. He initially hung up his cleats in May to pursue a career in the broadcast booth of ESPN's Monday Night Football.

I wish him well.
Good! Now let’s go out and WIN a Super Bowl or more.
And admire Jason and hope this isn’t a mistake.
I confess, with everything I’m hearing about the post-playing life of many players, I question if this is the right thing for Witten.
I get that it’s tough to walk away from all the good things that go with playing, but I do hope he’s at least considered the long-term ramifications. Or perhaps, he figures, that the damage has already been done, anyway.
That’s good. I was tired of every damn telecast having an ex-Cowboy commentator. I wonder if ESPN will hire Dez Bryant as his replacement?
I hope he has been working out.
He was starting to lose a step his last year playing.
Let alone after taking a year off.
Everybody knows the juice in the legs go over time, if your Tom Brady you may not need it, but a TE does.
A “stop gap” measure for the Cowboys and padding his stats for Witten.
As a rabid fan of both Cowboys and Witten I hope he thought long and hard before deciding this.
Could be embarrassing. Or a SuperBowl ring.
I wonder what his wife thinks about this?
Good ball player. Still can contribute to the team.
Could be he’s really going to be a coach......................
Hmm, I wonder if Jerry has indicated that to Witten.
Interesting that the Cowboys’ new OC is Kellen Moore, who was the Cowboys’ backup QB.
Would Witten step into the OC role if Moore gets Garrett’s job, after the Cowboys’ inevitably flame out next season?
ex-Cowboy commentators:
Tony Romo
Troy Aikman
Daryl ‘MOOSE’ Johnston
Brian Billick
Danny White
Deion Sanders
Michael Irvin
Mike Ditka
Don Meredith
Just off the top of my head..................
He probably got wind of his performance reviews from his ESPN gig...
This.
I don’t think so.
With Jon Kitna as the new QBs coach, it’s going to be an interesting year................
I think he and Sean Lee would be great coaches(better than Jason Garrett, anyway)
Sad to see this. He looked laborious on the field two years ago, I can’t imagine he has gotten any faster or more agile. He is going to end up getting hurt. Why didn’t he just go into coaching if the MNF thing failed?
It does look like Jerry is already preparing for the post-Garrett world.
