Am I Alone In Having NOT Watched Any Oscar Movies? [Monday Morning Vanity]

Reading through the list of Oscar winners, I realize that I have not watched a single one of these movies. Not one. Not only not the winners, but none of the nominees. Am I alone in this?

It has been 4 decades since I saw an Oscar movie. I have a DVD of They Shall Not Grow Old and will watch it at home when I get my DVD slide unstuck or replaced. I have only bought two movies in those decades. The other one is Toronado.

These movies come out at the end of the year, and if you're waiting for you local library to get the DVD, you won't have seen them before the ceremony.

I did see a few that came out earlier:

Black Panther: Would not have been nominated without the racial angle. Typical Marvel Movie. I hate typical Marvel Movies.

Isle of Dogs: Way too long, like a joke that somebody keeps telling, never getting to the punchline. Hard to care about the characters or take seriously.

First Reformed: Not a bad drama, though I have trouble remembering what happened in it.

A Quiet Place: Standard thriller/horror from that awful guy from The Office. Can't see why a movie where nobody talks was nominated for a sound Oscar.

Ready Player One: Could not get into it. If people in 2047 are obsessed with 1980s pop culture then civilization really is doomed.

Solo: A Star Wars Story: More from the factory. Watchable and not bad, though.

No, have not watched any of them.

I dont watch anything that is pandering, cartoonish, silly, or with leftist values.

I wanted to watch the film that colorized WWII but I will wait for the DVD or netflix.

Strictly from a reversion, restorative point of view. 😁

I also confess I went to a Spice Girls concert (to chaperone my kids, of course).

I saw the Japanese film Shoplifters, which was nominated in the foreign film catagory.. Watched via the web, not at a theatre, watching it had nothing to do wih the Oscars.

The only new Movies we have seen are ones that show up on one of those HBO Free Preview Weekends.

Thank goodness for our DVR.

I’ve always wanted a Toronado. Jay Leno made his Rear Wheel Drive.

“They Shall Not Grow old”

I'd not really include this in the "All Hollywood is evil" category, as it's so far removed from standard Hollywood fare.

I'm looking forward to seeing it again, to catch what I missed. I was blown away by the cinematography, and often found myself wanting to rewind so I could catch up with what was said. No Rewind Button at the theater, though. :-)

If you see it, be sure to catch the 30-minute recap with Peter Jackson (the director). How he made the movie was almost as interesting as the movie itself.

Last in-theater movie we attended was at least four years ago. Maybe five.

Usually, if I pay money for a movie, it’s because I’ve found something I want to see in a pawn shop. There are rare exceptions.

I saw none of the movies nominated for Best Picture.

Was tempted to see Bohemian Rhapsody but never got around to it.

If “Chappaquiddick” had been nominated for Best Picture, I’d have laughed. I did see that one - but given the leftward tilt of the Oscars, there’s no way it’d have received a vote.

I am very surprised at the number of people in the thread that apparently have not been to a movie theater for 20-40 years?!

Equally surprising is the number of folks saying they only watch documentaries. I always thought that was the PBS crowd.

Both are surprising observations.

We're down to a handful of movies a year at the theaters, never a documentary at a theatre, rarely one at home. We do watch movies at home. Have our own "big screen" that measures about 12 feet wide.

None, and as much as I wanted to see Bohemian Rhapsody, I never got to the theater. I can’t wait for HBO, tho!
