The graph is from gartner. I work in data analytics and business intelligence and have been for the past twenty odd years. Your son should play with tableau, powerBi and Qlikview. He should learn DAX coding, M query, SQL programming, python, Javascript, perl, Java (for Hadoop) and some shell scripting. Let him look up free visuals on tableau and power bi websites. In addition data modeling, learning about containers, data bricks, etc will help. Oh and of course R programming
