“the number one breed chosen to be trained as war dogs”

The German Shepherd is still #1 for military work worldwide.

I loved the “Blue Iris” software for Windows. Unfortunately, their complex and seemingly arbitrary pricing scheme got out of hand about the same time Microsoft went crazy and started breaking my setup every 6 months.

In a pique I dumped the whole configuration and installed Linux Mint on an old machine I had laying around. I researched, tested and settled upon a free, open-source motion detection software system called, unsurprisingly, “Motion”. It installed without incident and began servicing my three wifi cameras almost from its default configuration. Documentation was perfectly adequate for a simple implementation but the software supports all-powerful customization if you are so inclined. The software includes a small web server so you can, with a simple router tweak (port-forward), stream your cam output to the internet. The motion detection system included area masking, automatic detection optimizations, and support for any simple or complex system of file archiving that you wish to devise. It even gives you calls to other software routines or system scripting as it detects movement. It has its own web page which is very capable, and includes controls for mechanical Pan-Tilt-Zoom if your camera has such.

For viewing movies, I found that a program called MPV works beautifully with digital pan and zoom and a large inventory of movie protocols.

I’ve spent a lot of time customizing it, including the development of my own webpage, but that’s just me. For a Linux novice it would work fine. I would suggest you become a little familiar with your Linux file system.

It has certainly cost less time (and much less money) then keeping Microsoft working.

If you have:
1. Approx 5 yr-old computer.
2. $15-$20 Chinese Cameras. (get ‘em quick b4 they’re tariffed.
3. Wifi router

The cost is $NOTHING$$$. (If you like it you may donate to the Motion people, Linux project, or other open source providers.)

For info see: https://motion-project.github.io/motion_guide.html

Don’t let the references to sudo, apt, ffmpeg, install, etc. discourage you. The package you need is in the Linux Mint “app store”.

Well so long as you fire it outside; inside it’ll make a mess. Best indoor is #4 shot.

I have used some passive devices that work pretty well.

Skylink HA-300 Long Range Household Alert & Alarm Deluxe Home Business Office Motion Security Indoor Outdoor Infrared Detector System Kit

I have four of these that I have coupled to Mr. Beam Spotlights:

Mr. Beams MB392, 400 Lumen Version, Weatherproof Wireless Battery Powered Led Ultra Bright Spotlight with Motion Sensor, 2-Pack, Brown

I use the brown Mr. Beams with the zone alarm for camouflage. By the types of signal you hear, you will be able to determine the intruder path. I live in a forest. The alarms and spots are well hidden in the trees and give me a good idea of direction and entry to the zone around my home.

You can add more alarms creatively for greater coverage. The 4-battery Mr. Beam spotlights are far more efficient than the 3-DC battery variety.

This system works very well for me to passively gain situational awareness.

Just consider it a first alert system that is passive, does not require external power and is flexible in its installation. Secondary methods are just that. Secondary. Situational awareness can give you the upper hand.

Here is a vid of some of what it looks like on my iPad. Car cam has IR off as it’s through a window. House cam shows night vision. (Couldn’t help the orientation.)

1. Home alarm system and signs saying you have one.
2. Exterior lighting.
3. A gentle but protective dog.
4. Proficiency with firearms and willingness to use them.
My go to weapon is a 17 round 9mm Taurus at my bedside and an AR-15 with a light and laser sight hanging on the wall at the ready. I live in the countryside so neighbors are not a factor.
5. A pre thought out plan of what to do if bad happens.
Actually #5 is the most important. When bad happens it is to late to think out a plan. Actually if bad happened in my home my first duty is to get my wife out of the house via a side door to the bedroom. When I built this house that is why that door is their. It opens to my backyard where my wonderful dogs are. It would not be a good place for a bad guy. I do not want a gun fight in my home unless it is unavoidable. Once outside with the AR there ass belongs to me. This is Texas and it would be a legal shoot.

We keep a large pet water-bowl and huge dog bone near the front and back doors. Can’t tell you how many times workmen, city utility people or others have stopped abruptly and asked, “is your dog put away/under control?” (We don’t have a dog.)

I haven’t read all the comments, this may be redundant but I offer it anyway.

I have a similar system set up but mine includes ducks also. Learning which alerts how and when in combination with the others tells you almost exactly who/what is outside without having to look which minimizes the number of times Im involved directly.
