Written and recorded by Isaac Hayes in 1971 for the MGM film 'Shaft'.

The song begins with a sixteenth-note hi-hat ride pattern, played by Willie Hall, which was drawn from a break on Otis Redding's "Try A Little Tenderness", a Stax record on which Hayes had played. Also featuring heavily in the intro is Charles Pitts' guitar, which uses a wah-wah effect common in 1970s funk; the riff had originally been written for an unfinished Stax song. The synthesized keyboard is played by Hayes. Even on the edited single version, the intro lasts for more than one and-a-half minutes before any vocals are heard. The arrangement was by Hayes and Johnny Allen.

Great intro. On par with Lou Reed’s Sweet Jane and Mellankamp’s I need a Lover.

I remember Isaac Hayes performing the theme at the Academy Awards. Very cool.

AT LAST! A song that is familiar. Honestly, most music these days just fails me. Age? Tastes change?

Didn’t see it, but saw a video of it. That was quite a spectacle.

Perfect 3:13 cut, just right for radio.

Brings back some memories, most not that good.

I enlisted at 17 in 1971 and was in USAF Tech School at Lowry, AFB (Denver, CO).

First time in "the big city" for me.

So this music resonated for me as John Shaft walked the city streets, I related it to my walks in downtown Denver.

Loved the movie!

Maybe I’m just getting old, but movies were more fun back then...

Neither...most pop music these days is totally unremarkable and therefore sucks. Mellow/cool jazz is still pretty good.

I was looking at theme music from old shows yesterday morning, off on a rabbit trail started by listening to old radio plays.

A show called “Consider Your Verdict” used the same theme as “Ironsides.”
Ironsides had a theme composed by Quincy Jones who later came out with a four minute version for the album “Smackwater Jack.”

Now we need someone to make an old style detective show for Melody Gardot’s “It Gonna Come.”

Thanks for the post; The 70s was bad fashion but great for music and movies.

BTW - If you love commercial free 60s and 70s music (from Mott the Hoople to Isaac Hayes) you may enjoy Yes2day radio on TuneIn OR over the net.
