/That film was and is one of the most moving experiences of my life,

Same here. I came upon the book by accident, just cruising the aisles in the library one day. After reading about what he went through and the person he was able to become, I felt like a terrible human being. I was in my late 20s at the time and think it was instrumental in how I wanted to see myself going forward.

The movie is excellent. I expect more people know about Merrick from the movie than the book, but that’s OK. I just hope it makes them think about themselves as persons - and how they treat others.

In addition to the fantastic make up, outstanding acting performances by Anthony Hopkins and the late Jonhn Hurt, plus fine directing by the great David Lynch.
