Bottom line it’s essentially “Because we can!”. That’s all the justification they think they need...and they’ve gotten away with it.

I seem to remember that the family didn't want to draw attention to their son's death. Sounds like someone "got" to them or paid them off.

But I don't know why the judge would suppress the discovery. Knowing who he is and his Leftist opinions and positions, sounds like an attempt to hide the truth.

Smells awfully fishy to many people.

It's pretty standard in civil cases. In discovery, you can ask for all sorts of records and information from the other side, much of which is private (financial and medical records, for example), and most of which ultimately turns out to be irrelevant to anything. So it's common to order that all the information be treated as confidential. If there is a trial, whatever is offered in evidence will be public.
