Deposit Fees
17 Jan 2019

How can the state of California collect deposit fees on plastic bottles of .05 cents per bottle and .10 cents per quart of oil and never pay out on it? If anyone else collected a deposit that was never paid they would find themselves in a world of trouble.

Hey rey,

What is your experience of CA not paying?

PS, they put sales tax on the deposit; that you do NOT get back.

Here in MA, I no longer ever return cans/bottles for the deposit.

It’s effectively a tax. The left won this battle, and I don’t have time nor the inclination to fight it. There are bigger battles to be waged, and no clear indicator whether they will be won or lost.

We had a battle on a gax tax increase, and won on that one at least.

Obama collected BILLIONS in "penalties" from banks and then used them in slush funds for the DNC.

They were entirely unaccountable.

Simple, just collect all of your bottles and drive them to Michigan.

Good point.

And I’ve always been amazed how they force people to re-register the same vehicle over and over and over for $$$, regardless if the title/ownership/address never change. This is is a big league con-job. Like when they promised cable TV would be commercial free.

According to the above, you receive your payout from privately-run recycling centers, not from the State of Kalifornia.

California isn’t alone in this. Other states charge fees for soda bottle and cans, usually .05 cents. Iowa did when I lived there back in the day.

Almost all states charge your a fee when you have your oil changed. I had to get a new battery for my car in November and they charge a fee for replacing the battery.

Give them a reason and they will charge you.

Even when your garbage is picked up those that sort out the plastic bottles for recycling are virtue signaling, when the reality is those get thrown in the land fills because recycling is not profitable.

We recycle both our bottles and our used motor oil through our scavenger company. I do not know for sure, but I will bet you that the scavenger company is collecting the money from the State for both of these items. For years the scavenger companies fought having to collect “recyclables,” now they are “all in” for these programs, so there must be substantial money involved.

We go to a recycler and they very scrupulously differentiate between the bottles that have a deposit and those that don’t. For glass and for plastic.

The only reason for this would be that the deposit bottles are worth more. The only way they’d be worth more is if the recycler is getting some of that deposit money back.
