FWIW - When we are doing Naval Gun Fire Support when the ranging round is fired we give a radio call "Shot, out". Three seconds before the round should land we call, "Splash, over".

This gives the NGFS foward controller just enough warning that he can pop his head up (if under fire) to see the shell land and call any adjustment.

man - it’s been a looooong time since I’ve heard that....course our otto didn’t really do much NGFS - but when we did get a live fire opportunity we put more lbs on target in a shorter time then the 5 inchers.
