This was in the late 1970’s early 1980’s.
He also said adding decks didn’t matter as much as you’d think because the ratio of cards remained the same. I am not a math guy.

Also he didn’t just play Black Jack He’d play poker which is, I think, always with one deck of cards

I learned this by watching my buds play blackjack in Vegas. When you aren’t playing it frees up your mind to see what is going on in the game. The players are too focused to notice what is going on.
