Next week marks two years since Sayeed and Cara Anams only son shot himself in the head in the back of an Austin police cruiser. But time has done little to ease their pain, clearly outlined in the wrongful death lawsuit they filed Wednesday against the city. That arrest was just the latest for Zachary Anam, 19, who had been charged with several crimes in the preceding year, including burglary and drug possession. Police interviews with those who knew Anam indicated a history of substance abuse and mental health concerns...According to a police report, store security had detained him after catching him trying to cut tags off clothing, a watch and a pair of earrings and walk out of the store. Officer Iven Wall found a crystal-like substance he believed to be methamphetamine inside a folded-up dollar bill while placing the teen in custody, according to the report. But he missed a pistol a Glock semi-automatic .380 hidden under Anams waistband. On the way to booking, dispatch audio obtained by KXAN reveals Anam told Wall he was suicidal.

Quite!
Missed a .380. Sounds like the search was just procedure and he was not really looking for anything.
Still, I don’t think the kid’s death is their responsibility. It’s not like he was a “first time offender” and it may be that the parents just want him to be their cash cow as his legacy.
The parents would not want me on the jury.
I don’t buy the term ‘missed’ in the frisking job of the arrest. Cops just don’t make that mistake. Maybe if this was a rookie cop....but if you tell me this is a 10-year veteran of the police department....I’m not buying the story.
The parents clearly did not raise him right, and now they want a payout, via blaming someone else for what their son chose to do to himself.
"...want him to be their cash cow as his legacy..."
Austin's peaceful law-abiding citizens should sue Sayeed and Cara Anam for inflicting an entitled criminal upon them.
A previous mug shot of Anam. Emphasis on previous.
I suppose it would be tasteless to include a screen shot from the movie Scanners. Not that I’m encouraging anyone to do that, of course.
Maybe the parents of this mentally disturbed individual should sue HIM. He’s the one who shot him self. Maybe they should sue them selves since they raised this kid inadequately. Just sayin’...
Why should a hardworking citizen of Austin have to pay out millions to attorneys and this mother and father (presumably) because they f’d up raising their son?
Part of the answer is Austin loves to settle a case. In nearly 50 years of being in or near this town, I’ve settled five lawsuits with them. The last was 3 jury trials where 3 different juries, all liberals one can safely presume, ruled for the conservative conservative developer (me) on the exact same subject. They finally gave up and I paid a hundred bucks to settle their bogus building permit claim (over a detention pond) which could have been millions against me.
While there is an occasional rogue Austin jury, many lawyers prefer going to trial in Austin on complex cases due to the fact that educated Austin liberals have demonstrated a higher level of discernment than rural counties.
In my case on the 3 jury trials over the same issue, a first grader could figure out what the City was up to. It was a complete no brainer... .except for certain politicians pushing it.
I used to work in a booking facility. You'd be surprised at what officers miss when patting down someone just arrested.
Heck, the way things are right now, if cops frisk them too competently, they’re going to wind up with a sexual assault suit against them ...
Just retask them as TSA. /s
