I’m surprised that all those top athletes don’t have performance clauses in their contracts.

Some general managers hate individual performance bonuses. Lou Lamoriello, the GM of the New Jersey Devils who was considered perhaps the top GM in all of North American sports from around 1990 to 2005, was notorious for refusing to include individual performance bonuses in his player contracts. Instead, he paid team bonuses for wins, playoff appearances, Stanley Cup championships, and even shutouts.

His rationale was that he never wanted players to think about what was best for them individually, but what was best for the whole team.

In a hard capped league performance clauses are dangerous for the team. Best to not have a lot of them.

They do, among others. Workout bonuses, etc..
