not to far from Jantzen beach if I recall correctly. I lived in Yacolt, WA
I loved the old Army an Navy surplus stores. Lots of good bargains. Bought a box of nazi stamped 9mm once. Shot it up and later found my pistol so corroded it took days to clean the mess out of the bore.
Good cheap rifles for $10 dollars. Cash and carry, no waiting period, no paperwork, no background check, if you looked “old enough” no age limit.
In Seattle, Navy Pea Coats were popular when I was in high school (also ‘72). We used to take the bus into town to prowl the surplus stores.
In the 50s there was a larger selection of goods.
Kaufman’s on W 42nd or on Canal in NYC was THE place.
School boys were all dressed in various OD outerwear in winter. As they grew, coats and jackets were handed down to younger brothers or neighbors. They wore like iron.
Boy Scouts troops on hikes used a lot of war surplus goods...web belts, mess kits, knapsacks, mummy bags, canteens, pup tents, etc.
Peace Surplus was founded in 1973 in downtown Tucson by the Chatinsky family. The store's roots were based in military surplus with an ample supply of weather balloons, parachutes, military fatigues, gurneys, ammo cans and much more. Even though we continue to carry the surplus name, the store has evolved into a full-service outdoor, camping, hiking, and backpacking store.
Now in Flagstaff.
As a early 60's kid I used Army/Navy parts to build an oscilloscope and copper tank aerial sections to make fertilizer/sugar rockets...
Armygear.net has great prices compared to other surplus stores. Worth it to shop around a litte. Sportsman Guide gets in surplus you can’t find anywhere else occasionally.
Yacolt, eh? My dad bought about 40 acres near there in 1952, for something like $3000. It’s still in the family, but I haven’t been up that way for at least 40 years. I should call my brother in Camas and see if he knows anything about it.
Got a catalog from our local surplus store on my desk! lol

No I think your good...
I have enjoyed the memorabilia since I was a kid myself. :)
Thanks,
I’m looking at a canvas
Tool bag and They are Great
for range bags!
I just need a “Range!”
We have 4 Surplus stores here in
San Diego that know me by name and they
Always give me Great Deals!
Delks is a great place. Just don’t plan on going down there after lunch on a Saturday.
Lol, Stripper clips of course. Not long ago I ran across a box of .303 strippers for mine cheap at a surplus store. Couple hundred at least for 25 bucks, that was a good score. :)
“.the aroma of damp canvass!”
The price of canvas today is insane.
Me too.
Garand clips,
Spent .50 cal brass and
Deactivated grenades,
I love it All!
An auto no doubt
A serious collector then. Nothing wrong with that. I think one of the best things I have came across yet was a brand new vintage leather US .45 shoulder holster. Got a thing for .45s so that was cool. lol
Those Army blankets were very good in extreme cold.
In January-February, 1961 or 1962, in Grafenwohr, Germany at 26-35 below zero, we were sleeping in the field, under the canvass taken from a 155 Howitzer, split-trail, fully combat ready clothed, and covered with our own pup tent half and our "Army Blanket" and we survived the nights.
I've been hunting since 1949, in severe cold, but I've never 'lived' that long in that kind of cold and wind.
The Army Blanket was a great piece of GI equipment.
To this day, I don't know how we all survived with nothing more than some frost bite {which is serious}, but we had no deaths.
I remember Kaufmans from my Manhattan days in the 80s
My girlfriend would buy berets and socks and stuff there...
