A children's speech pathologist who has worked for the last nine years with developmentally disabled, autistic, and speech-impaired elementary school students in Austin, Texas, has been told that she can no longer work with the public school district, after she refused to sign an oath vowing that she “does not” and “will not” engage in a boycott of Israel or “otherwise tak[e] any action that is intended to inflict economic harm” on that foreign nation. A lawsuit on her behalf was filed early Monday morning in a federal court in the Western District of Texas, alleging a violation of her First Amendment right of free speech.

The child language specialist, Bahia Amawi, is a U.S. citizen who received a master’s degree in speech pathology in 1999 and, since then, has specialized in evaluations for young children with language difficulties (see video below). Amawi was born in Austria and has lived in the U.S. for the last 30 years, fluently speaks three languages (English, German, and Arabic), and has four U.S.-born American children of her own.

I don’t care what religion the lady belongs to. Christians have also objected to taking this oath. Some went elsewhere for jobs, others were unhappy but signed the paper because they needed the work. If she stands up in class and tells the kids to hate Israel then she deserves to be fired but you can’t fire someone for refusing to buy Israeli made products. Your job does not have the right to dictate your personal opinions.

*** I see an oath not to engage in a harmful act to another country... ***

Do you know that in Dickinson, TX after Hurricane Harvey, Citizens not signing, “the oath” were denied damages relief?

The lady didn’t sign because she does not buy products produced in Israel. She has lost her job because of that.

It is a horrible law. What if it were a law punishing people who decide to buy made in America, instead of made in China?
I am a Texan, and support BDS. A consumer should be able to spend their money on things not produced in a particular country if he chooses.

being required to take a Pro-Israel oath is unconstitutional.

To be clear, the problem isn't that it's Israel. The problem is that it's a foreign country. I think they're trying to keep the employees from politicizing the workplace. That's a laudable goal, but they need to revisit how they're doing it.

An easy fix for the school district is to hire her as an employee. The laws do not apply to individuals employed by a public entity; it is a condition for being awarded the contract. They left that part out too.

Teachers also work by being awarded a contract.

Man, I hate this. I’m pro-Israel, but she should not have to sign. Sheesh!

When I was a nipper in California in the 50s, there was a law that required every government employee to take an oath of loyalty to the Constitution. This even extended to kids who worked in school cafeterias to get a free lunch (imagine if a kid didn’t have money for lunch, he/she had to work for it). Anyway, that law was struck down, so I have no doubt that this one will be too.

I took the oath in 1971. I think it was communist Angela Davis who got it thrown out when she was hired at Cal.

My impulse is to agree with you. But the media lies constantly. Until, I read the so-called oath, I have no reason to believe that this isn’t commie propoganda
