Lincoln bringing back 'suicide doors' on 2019 Continental
FoxNews.com/auto ^ | Dec 17, 2018 | Gary Gastelu | Fox News

Lincoln brought back the Continental name two years ago and now it's resurrecting a feature that’s commonly known by a name it would prefer you don’t use.

To celebrate the 80th anniversary of the model, Lincoln is offering a limited run of 80 Coach Door Edition Continentals for 2019 equipped with what are colloquially
known as “suicide doors.”

The rear-hinged rear doors hearken back to the 1961-1969 heyday of the Continental, when it was at the height of fashion.
They offer a stylish and arguably easier way to enter and exit the vehicle.

I predict they will sell no more than 80 of them.

You know those cars with “gull wing” doors? Turned out the cars couldn’t fly. Total gyp!

But Deloreans can travel through time.

Went to the prom in my mom’s white 76 Lincoln. Beautiful, hulk of car. Fun to drive.

Friend of mine had a ‘70 (pretty sure) Mark III. He called me over to help him replace his passenger side door and quarter panel once. That sumbitch door must have weighed 400lbs.

He got sideways on the ramp coming off a highway in the snow. There were two cars and a tow truck on the ramp sorting out a fender bender. He took out both cars AND the tow truck and pushed them off the road and down a grassy embankment. Nobody hurt and since his was the only vehicle still running, they all stayed warm in his Lincoln until the police and more wreckers arrived. :-)

No wonder millenials aren’t making babies. Look at the back seat of the new model, then look at the back seat of the original. See the problem?

I would. Great looking car with +400HP, reminds me of a Cadillac Seville STS I had years ago.

Nonsense? How do you know what mileage I got on the Mark IV I had? It was definitely less than 10 mpg. Maybe because the car needed to be better tuned.

In mine the doors could open independently of the front. I think that is what calls it “suicide”. If you open the door while at high rate of speed it could tear right off the hinges. And you couldnt’ stop it. It was a giant steel parachute.

I never thought of the passing car clipping it. That’s a better reason to call it that.

Why would anyone want a car that has doors that open against the flow of air as the car moves? Didn’t people figure that out 80 years ago when people called them what they are “suicide doors?”

Gee, go out on a limb and make a four door convertible version. Quite the heard mentality!
