I agree with your first sentence, not with the last. The stock market has traded in a range for 2018, currently about where we started the year and up approximately 30% since the election.
Investors are ultimately people, and people don’t always behave logically. The main 2 legitimate concerns of investors right now are 1) whether the Fed will raise interest rates too quickly and 2) a trade war with China.
If something goes horribly wrong with either of those things eventually US corporations whose stock make up the market won’t continue the wonderful increases in profitability they’ve had since the election. As a result the market has moved neither forward nor backwards fo the year.
The December 15 Fed announcement (I predict no 1/4% increase this time) will cheer the market but in reality another quarter point isn’t going to hurt a thing. China will take longer, but they, like the EU and Canada and Mexico, have little choice but to make improvements in their currently unfair trade practices.
