In my continuing series of posts on worthy Christmas music that gets little or no attention these days, I present "A Spaceman Came Travelling" by Chris de Burgh - an artist best known for the 1986 smash hit "The Lady in Red".
This song was first released back in 1975 on an album called Spanish Train and Other Stories and spent an incredible 16 weeks on top of the Irish music charts. It was never a big hit in the United States but has appeared on a number of Christmas compilations over the years so should be familiar to Christmas music enthusiasts here in the U.S.
The theme of the "Spaceman Came Travelling" is that Christmas and the story of Jesus came from an alien visitor, hence the reference to spacecraft in the song lyrics.
While I don't agree with that premise, I do find the song very haunting and ethereal. For me at least, the song gets better and better with each listen and has been played in my house every Christmas season since 1987.
I also always appreciated de Burgh’s music, including this unusual song. I grew up in Canada, and it was popular at that time. Thanks for the post!
