Alabama Quarterback Jalen Hurts Leads Crimson Tide To Win Over Georgia Bulldogs, SEC Championship

Alabama quarterback Jalen Hurts (2) speaks to fans after the Southeastern Conference championship NCAA college football game between Georgia and Alabama, Saturday, Dec. 1, 2018, in Atlanta. Alabama won 35-28.

Jalen Hurts spent most of the season watching from the sideline, cheering on the guy who took his job and hoping for one more chance to lead the Alabama Crimson Tide.

He didn't pout. He didn't gripe. He didn't transfer.

On Saturday, with Alabama’s season hanging in the balance, Hurts got the call.

The junior quarterback threw for one touchdown and ran for another with a little more than a minute left on the clock, rallying the top-ranked Tide to a 35-28 victory over No. 4 Georgia in the Southeastern Conference championship game.

It was a stunning twist on the scenario that played out less than 11 months earlier on the very same field.

"I've probably never been more proud of a player than Jalen," an emotional coach Nick Saban said moments after the triumph.

If this script had been pitched in Hollywood, it would've been laughed out of the room for being too implausible.

In last season's national title game at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, between these same two teams, Tua Tagovailoa replaced an ineffective Hurts at the start of the second half with Alabama trailing Georgia 13-0.

The replacement threw three touchdown passes, including a 41-yarder in overtime that gave the Tide a stunning 26-23 victory.

Tagovailoa won the starting job outright heading into this season and performed brilliantly before Saturday, throwing 36 touchdown passes with only two interceptions.

The SEC title game took a different path. Georgia put a beating on Tagovailoa, who was picked off twice, spent much of his spare time in the medical tent and was largely ineffective

Wow!

What an improbable come-back win.

Jalen Hurts is the most popular person in Alabama today.

Do you think they would have stopped Bama from 25 yards out? Kirby was stupid to think it would work. They prepared for it and flubbed it. But I don’t think they would have stopped Bama either way.

Every time Jalen went in this year, Bama fans showed him their love.

Wow, Alabama won a football game. Their players can all ride off into the sunset in their Chargers and Escapades.

The Georgia coach should be fired, the loss is on him.

I hate to think what the poor performance by TUA did to his Heisman prospects.

See his stats here.

Georgia lost twice
36:16 LSU
Which lost to Fla/Ala/TAMU
Then lost to Alabama in SEC playoffs

Georgia is a very good team, they will rank high in the bowls
But they are out of the playoffs

If Bama picks an MVP for the season Jalen gets my vote. It’s a “Rudy” inspiration.

Jalen Hurt was very gracious in the post game interview and thanked everyone who contributed to his success. I think he left out someone, Kirby Smart. (Actually, mentioning Smart would not have been gracious.)

That young man was well raised. His family and Alabama should be proud of him.

25 more yards than 50. It would only have run the clock down more.

The hate came out when I posted that. I did not even endorse the idea and everyone wanted to tar and feather.

Am I the only one who saw the parallels between Hurts and Ben Hur? (Grant initially blamed the near-disaster and heavy casualties at Shiloh on General Lew Wallace. The novel was about a Jewish Prince, Ben Hur, wrongly accused due to a misunderstanding for a near catastrophe, who later goes on to achieve redemption and acclaim.)

Only instead of matters of life and death, empires and emperors, this was about something important.

I think he will be fine if he misses out on the Heisman. He had a terrible game after spraining his ankle early. His throws were off. Plus our receivers had a bunch of drops. Maybe they needed a wake up call. They were discombobulated. Kudos to UGA for having their team ready to destroy the Tide. Bama needs to rest, heal, and mentally refocus if they want to win out.

"That young man was well raised. His family and Alabama should be proud of him."

This year, when Jalen came in as relief of TUA, he often got a standing O from the Alabama fans.

He's the most popular guy in Alabama today.

Dark is the stain that we cannot hide.
What can avail to wash it away?
Look! There is flowing a Crimson Tide,
Brighter than snow you may be today.

Why did did Sabin keep keep his Gimpy QB in for so long and risk loosing? I know why? He wanted to help Tag win the Heisman. Interestingly enough Hurts showed that Tag wasn’t all that and was able to perform every bit as well as Tag. Anyone else notice that. Is Tag just a beneficiary of a strong supporting cast or is Tag the reason that Alabama has had so much success? That question was answered yesterday. Tag is just a beneficiary.
