“We thought we were, you know, safe in a 5-star gated resort...”

The question is, why? Why would anyone think that?

I guess the water isn’t the only thing unsafe in Mexico to drink.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Methanol_toxicity

The initial symptoms of methanol intoxication include central nervous system depression, headache, dizziness, nausea, lack of coordination, and confusion. Sufficiently large doses cause unconsciousness and death. The initial symptoms of methanol exposure are usually less severe than the symptoms from the ingestion of a similar quantity of ethanol. Once the initial symptoms have passed, a second set of symptoms arises, from 10 to as many as 30 hours after the initial exposure, that may include blurring or complete loss of vision, acidosis, and putaminal hemorrhages, an uncommon but serious complication. These symptoms result from the accumulation of toxic levels of formate in the blood, and may progress to death by respiratory failure. Physical examination may show tachypnea, and ophthalmologic examination may show dilated pupils with hyperemia of the optic disc and retinal edema.

Assuming you are crazy enough to vacation in Mexico at this time at all, it sounds like you should only order beer and open the beer at your table.

Sounds like their using “tax free alcohols” that are commonly denatured with with a handful of chemicals - methanol being one of them.

well, climb over the wall, and go back to mexico, demand free education, free citizenship, free this that and the other thing, free money from the government, then demand that you be allowed to sue based on your new illegal alien ‘citizenship’ status

illegaL Invaders to our country sue our government all the time- turn about it fair play, right?

In the United States, there are all sorts of systems, laws, codes, and customs that keep you safe. People begin to think that these things are universal, because they are used to seeing them everywhere.

But they are not universal.

For instance, rails on balconies in the United States are high enough that if you run into them, your center of mass is below the rail, and you do not tend to flip over and fall. However, in Mexico, these rails are often only 36 or even 32 inches high, and if you run into them, you tend to go right over. This is, obviously, a bigger issue if you are drunk.

Anyone who vacations in Mexico should realize their life expectancy drops to days.

Third world countries have zero regard for life.

“Her family alleges that the resort knew the alcohol they gave the 20-YEAR-OLD was “poisonous.”

If she’d only waited one more year, she could have gotten blind-drunk in the US, which is still much safer (for now). Oh well, Darwin strikes again.
