Georgia Tech coach Paul Johnson stepping down after 11 seasons

Paul Johnson’s time at Georgia Tech has come to an end.

After multiple reports emerged earlier Wednesday afternoon, the school announced that Johnson has “elected to step down” as the Yellow Jackets’ head coach after 11 seasons with the program.

“After 40 years of coaching, it’s time to take a break,” Johnson said. “My family has sacrificed a lot over the years. I want to watch my daughter [Kaitlyn, a professional opera singer] perform and do some things with my wife [Susan] that we’ve never had a chance to do. It’s been a great run for the last 11 years here on The Flats. I’m proud of what we’ve accomplished and am looking forward to having the chance to coach this team one last time at our bowl game next month.”

Johnson, 61, has an 82-59 (51-37) record during his time at Georgia Tech and a 189-98 overall record as a Division I head coach, including his previous stops at Navy and Georgia Southern. Johnson is most known as one of the few coaches in the country who runs an option-based offense — one that led the country in rushing this season with an average of 334.9 yards per game.

Georgia Tech if my memory is correct is the last Power 5 school to run the triple option as the base offense. I grew up when that offense was widely used especially in the Big 8. Unless GT hires one of the military academy coaches that might be the end of the triple option in Power 5 football.

I was just at that last game Saturday in Athens. My boyfriend a huge Bulldogs fan told me about the triple option same as Nebraska used to run in the 70’s! He said it was crazy to use that old play. Forgive me I don’t understand football despite having been a cheerleader for four years. LOL. Anyway I’m originally from Nebraska back in the days they had the best team in the country. Those days are long gone too.

I went to GT. I haven’t watched a GT football game in years. I can’t stand that offense. Paul Johnson’s best offenses were when he had Chan Gaileys recruits (pro style coach). They could throw it when they needed to throw.

I can’t wait to see a real offense put in place.

Good riddance Coach.

Chan Gailys offense sucked. Paul Johnson’s actualky scored points. The problem isnt the coaches, “its the fans” and the players know it and known it for a long time (starting the year after Tech won the national championship in 1990). Tech fans boo the players and coaches while in the stands (too dumb to realize there are recruits in the stands) to probably being the worst when it comes to supporting the team when they lose. I hope to see Paul Johnson go back to southern or Navy where I can see him winning a national championship in yes, D1.

I love watching the option. I don’t care which team runs it.

It’s an offense that required exact running routes and exact blocking. Schools with smaller o-lines can succeed with it against defenses that are bigger physically.

That’s why the option/triple option is so successful.

GA Tech - The MIT of the south.

GA Tech Band - Where the men are men, and so are the women.

Eh. Every ex coach is hated for some reason or another.

But, other than maybe 2 bowl games, how many times did GT beat a team that had 2 weeks or more to prepare for the offense? Didn’t he win his first bowl game at GT about 4 years ago?

That offense scored when teams weren’t prepared for the unconventional offense, or they could out physical someone.

Down by 14 with the triple option recruits? DOA 99% of the time.

I had friends in the band in the early 90s because one of the kids played lacrosse at GT with me.

They were party freaks. I loved hanging out with them.

Chan Gaily was hated before he was an ex coach. In the beginning of the 4th quarter when they would play a very positive and helpful Chan Gaily commercial about dont drink and drive, he would get booed so loudly that announcers couldnt not talk about it. Tech needs to fix the fan culture or they will never be successful.

Yeah. I went to GA Southern, we didn’t play GA Tech, but once we played Florida State, and the band went along. Football team lost but the bands had a big ol’ party, got along great and many friends were made.
