Mack Brown is expected to return as head coach of North Carolina after he and the school have reached an agreement on a contract, reports 247Sports.com. According to the report, an announcement is expected as soon as Tuesday.

The 67-year-old Brown is currently an analyst at ESPN. Brown was originally hired at UNC in 1988 and led the Tar Heels to three 10-win seasons and three bowl victories before being hired away by Texas in 1998.

WOW!!! The guy was real good at UNC thirty years ago and his record earned him the Texas head coaching gig. I have seen other instances of coaches returning to previous jobs as it did not work out well: Johnny Majors back to Pitt, and Randy Edsall at U Conn come to mind. Bill Walsh went back to Stanford and had a great first season but retired after 2 losing seasons.

Brown was a tired old man when he was pushed out at Texas. NC will be back searching in two years having burnt a few million and not won anything.

AT 67 years old Mack isn’t going to be able to relate to 17-18 y/o D-1 level kids. But hey, UNC is a hoops school so who really cares?

Always liked Mack Brown but not sure about this move. Recalling when the Redskins brought back Joe Gibbs...

I don’t know. Brown had himself a well paying and easy gig with ESPN. I think football coaches are like boxers and can’t turn off the adrenaline rush that comes with their respective sports. Same thing with Jon Gruden going back to the NFL and the Raiders after a long stint with ESPN as well. I guess Bill Cowher is resisting the urge to coach again. He seems to enjoy working at CBS.

Mack is a great coloe commentator for college football, but his Achilles Heel at Texas was that he was too lax and pandered to his “Blue Chip” athletes. He’s neither a disciplinarian, nor is he capable of coaching good athletes into becoming great athletes. He’s always relied too heavily on high school player rankings, and was marginal at best when evaluating future potential. That said, Mack’s a really good man.

I’m close to MB’s age and eat healthy (lots of chicken & veggies), drink a ton of water and workout 5-6 days a week.

That said...

My energy level is noticeably lower than 10 years ago as is most adults at that age. Of course, there are exceptions...like DJT.

MB will not last very long...esp if he is actively engaged in recruiting. A downside, most kids/parents will know MB will not be the coach throughout the kid’s 4-yr career.

The only person who could stop the Big-12 Offensive Player of the year was Mack Brown! He benched Major Applewhite for Chrissy Simms! Good Grief!

I agree with all that. He’s an affable guy who would make a great neighbor. He makes a nice impression on potential recruits’ parents. But it was clear that his time had passed when he was at Texas; the inmates were running the asylum.

” NC will be back searching in two years having burnt a few million and not won anything.”

But the City of Chapel Hill police dept. will save money on not having to cover as many victory party celebrations on Franklin Street.

At 2-9 this year they are definitely under budget.

Saban is selling yearly national championships, Mack will be doing annual rebuilds at UNC.

Brown won’t have the kind of pressure at UNC he had at Texas.

seek someone for a long range hire. JMO

Yep, a lot of donors want him back. I suspect the snowflakes at Tech don’t want him, though.
