Are there any other Freeper potters? I’m a newbie of 2 years. Mostly hand building but learning the wheel. Would love to get to know other conservative potters. As you can imagine, the art is full of liberals. Ugh.

Bumping your post. I’m not into pottery but my father was quite good at all things art. He was a metal sculptor, potter, painter and all things multi-media.
My childhood was spent traveling to summer outdoor art shows all across this great nation. It was a fun way to grow up as a child. I saw a lot of the country and met a lot of great people.
He was a teacher for his ‘real’ job the other 9 months of the year. He had one man shows in NYC and in Paris and Minneapolis. He was a great guy.
I so appreciate conservatives that pursue the art angle. We are waaaay outnumbered today. Not so much then.
Can’t help you with throwing clay. I do papier mache when I feel moved. Too many damn gardens! I’m glad it’s cold now and I can create!
I plugged an old seepwell with some bentonite once. Worked like a charm.
No but I took a summer college ceramic class just for fun - I know what you mean. The instructor was an insufferable liberal twit. He honestly felt he was part of an elite class and deserved to be paid much more, being a member of the Intelligentsia. Gag worthy. He was a very bitter person. Needless to say, I did not take Ceramics II. But I love pottery, especially raku.

Sounds like a wonderful childhood. My 2nd child might be like your dad. He takes art in high school. He is/has been very good and creative at pottery, jewellery, drawing, etc. I haven’t talked with him recently about it, but last he indicated to me, he wants to be an art teacher.
I’m not a potter, even though I’ve thrown on the wheel in the past. I am currently working with colored pencils, learning the medium, and I really like it. I do know what you mean about libs in the arts, having been an art teacher. How do you like throwing compared to hand building?

I saw a movie the other day, and thought I’d share an idea - there was a scene set in a ceramics store that had tables set up for customers to paint their penguins or deer or vases or whatever they had purchased. It was just brief, so I don’t know if the idea was to come back the next day to allow time for them to be fired or if it was a paint-and-go kinda thing, but it seemed like a really neat idea for suburbia -lots of play-date groups of children in the background. Reminded me of build-a-bear. With finished products for mom and dad to buy. Seems like a great hobby that could turn into a pin-money endeavor. Have fun!
