It’s even worse they don’t have any deductive reasoning or ability to identify irony. The quote itself can only mean one thing. If they thought the word “trivial” meant “important” then the quote is redundant and useless. I’m at a loss for what else they thought ‘trivial’ might mean in that context, perhaps “outside influence”. But in that case it would just be a banal statement of no real import. The quote only works because it is an observation of the irony of life.
