Mets righthander Jacob deGrom and Rays ace Blake Snell were named the NL and AL Cy Young Award winners, respectively, on Wednesday.

DeGrom, 30, notched his first Cy Young Award despite recording just 10–9 as a starter. DeGrom received 29 first-place votes over the Nationals' Max Scherzer, who received one. John Maffei of the San Diego Union-Tribune was the only writer to place Scherzer ahead of deGrom on their ballot. Aaron Nola finished in third.

Blake Snell is from Shoreline WA, the little city adjacent mine.

His dad was a KC Royal’s minor league pitcher and owns a small baseball academy there....Showcase Sports.

Both my daughter and son took some lessons from Dave and his other son Drew.

His dad also is the coach for the Community College.

??? “fewest LOSSES” ??? Don’t you mean fewest wins? Certainly there have been Cy Young Award winners with fewer than 9 losses!

Degroms stats were sick... I believe he only gave up 3 runs twice all year.

If he played for Boston he may have won 30 games... That is how dominant he was.

The Mets just did’t have enough offense to support him. Same with Corey Kluber in 2015 a year after he won his first. Very good pitching, the runs just weren’t there.

The most ridiculous season for pitching stats in my memory was Nolan Ryan’s 1987 season for Houston. He went only 8-16 despite having the lowest ERA and the most strikeouts in the National League.

Ron Guidry went 25-3 in 1978 with (I think) a 1.82 ERA...

Dennis Eckersley went 7-1 to win it in 1992 ;^) ;^)

of course he was a closer by that year, with 51 saves!

One of the rare times that a relief pitcher has won a Cy Young

How about Steve Carlton and the ‘72 Phillies? He *was* their pitching staff...something like 27 wins for a team that won a grand total of 54 all season.

Of course, in ‘71 Rick Wise won 17 for them. One of those was a no-hitter where *he* hit a pair of homers.
