Calgary, Alberta, voters shot down a potential bid to host the 2026 Winter Olympics on Tuesday, likely putting to bed the city’s plan to host the upcoming games.

56 percent of voters chose “no” on Tuesday when asked whether they wanted to pursue an Olympic bid, according to the Associated Press. While the vote isn’t official, it will likely impact the city council — which has the final say. The vote is expected to be declared official on Friday.

“The opportunity to welcome the world to Canada, where people can experience the uniting power of the Games and within our nation’s culture of peace and inclusion, would have offered countless benefits to all,” the Canadian Olympic Committee said in a statement. “This would have been a unique opportunity for Canadians to be leaders in fulfilling the promise of a renewed vision for the Games.”

I would ask Canada to trade Alberta for Minnesota and a few other states to be named later.

Good for Calgary refusing to go billions into debt to host a two week event whose every profit goes to the IOC.

The day is coming when nobody is going to want the Olympics.

I think the Olympics will be a thing of the past within the next decade.

I’ve heard fewer and fewer places around the world even want to place bids for Olympic games. .

If I recall correctly, there were only two bidders for the 2022 Winter Olympics?

Part of it, are the tough and costly demands made by Olympic organizers on host cities and countries.

More places are simply voting no on the whole process, and declining to be involved.

Nope. There will always be greed. A decade? No way.

Only authoritarian countries that want to do a Hitler 1936 Olympics will want to host.

“world’s largest sex orgy”

Yeah, most people aren’t aware of that. I wasn’t ‘till I heard Rush talking about it one time. Also, they hosted one in ‘88....guess they learned their lesson.

as I understand it, the Montreal Olympics (ie, the Bruce Jenner olympics) were just paid off like a year or two ago.

Calgary is a legit city.

This would be utter folly for them to take on an olympic vanity boondoggle.

Live here in Colorado ... back in 1970 the IOC granted the 1976 Winter Olympics to Denver. In 1972 voters rejected the winter Olympics outright in a 60-40 vote. Reason: Infrastructure costs were believed to be wildly underestimated and taxpayers didn’t want to foot the bill.

It really seems to make sense just to have the winter Olympics in 2 or 3 sites. Maybe places that actually get SNOW every winter. Say Norway or Switzerland. Keep the summer games in Athens where it started.

And they had two legs up on most cities, as most of the infrastructure from the ‘88 games is still there.

Even Boston voted against the summer Olympics. The memory of the 2004 Democratic convention was still fresh. It shutdown the whole city for a week.

Actually greed has a lot to do with why cities are bailing. There’s no money in the Olympics for the host city. Back when there was a belief in cash coming in for years after the tourism bump cities were lining up. Now that the math is in they’re out.

Calgary did it once already. I'd like to think they could host a lot cheaper than a new venue. Unfortunately, you're probably right.
