A 12 gauge shotgun seems a bit of an overkill for squirrels.

You mean that there would be nothing left? If so, I agree! However the following puzzles me;

Conservation Officers report the victim was not wearing any hunter orange.

Is there now 'hunter orange' face paint?

"A 12 gauge shotgun seems a bit of an overkill for squirrels."

I had a buddy who would show up for football Sunday with the guys and he'd bring along some barbecued squirrels from his latest "hunting" adventure. It would have been cheaper (and more filling) to run by Harris Teeter and pick up a rack of baby back ribs. And, as a bonus, you wouldn't be constantly spitting out shotgun pellets.

Not at all. Used one for decades and no, it doesn’t blow them apart according to old lore.

In this case, the gentleman needs to find a new hunting partner.
