On Tuesday, the College Football Playoff committee will release its first ranking of the top 25 teams in the country. But that ranking will be a tad misleading because only 12 schools still have a legit shot to be in college football's final four.
Three more playoff contenders were effectively eliminated from playoff contention this weekend, with Florida, Iowa, and Texas all suffering losses they won't be able to overcome. Meanwhile, there are three teams that appear to be locks for the playoff if they win their remaining games and several one-loss teams looking to make a claim for the final spot.
We have learned a few things over the years about how the committee picks the final four, and we have some idea of what teams need to do to make the playoff. Below, we ranked the 12 teams that still have a legit shot at making it.
1. Alabama
2. Clemson
3. Notre Dame
4. Ohio State
5. Michigan
6. Oklahoma
7. Georgia
8. LSU
9. West Virginia
10. Washington State
11. UCF
12. Kentucky

LSU will get hammered this week by Bama, and Georgia will get crushed in SEC Championship game.
and I say that as a died in the wool Georgia Bulldogs fan.
For the love of all that is right in pure in this country, somebody please beat Clempson!
GO DAWGS
Any team that does not play on the final Saturday of the regular season should not be considered for the four-team play off.
In the mean time, go Mountaineers!
ND will.
We’re headed for Alabama versus Clemson in the championship game unless LSU can beat Alabama this coming weekend.
Notre Dame at Northwestern. ND better take them seriously.
And the University of Minnesota (my alma mater) with a 4-4 record is not one of them.
Oh well, there’s always the Quick Lane Bowl...
Nebraska is turning things around, on a winning streak!
I have to agree with you.
I think Ed Orgeron turned out to be a far better fit at LSU than anybody expected, but I really can’t see him beating Alabama yet.
UGA? Only hope is if somehow LSU can beat Alabama and LSU and UGa match up in Atlanta.
Clemson has a cakewalk to the playoffs, and as a Gamecock it pains me to admit that.
Gregory Bull is a perfect name for someone who thought the Iowa Hawkeyes had a chance to be in the four-team playoff.
He needs to be locked up for his own protection.
UCF beat Connecticut, SC State, FL Atlantic, Pitt, SMU, Memphis, and East Carolina and finish off playing against Temple and Navy, Cincinatti, and U. South FL.
How does such a weak schedule get them into playoff consideration?
Could you please hold off on this until after next Saturday. Those of us who root for LSU are enjoying this 2 week period until the Alabama game. You will have plenty of time to make fun of LSU. Right now, LSU is still very much in the mix (I don't care about Georgia).
Also, while it is unlikely that LSU can beat Alabama (LSU: Really good defense, really unimpressive offense), the whole country wants to see Alabama lose. Everyone outside the state of Alabama will be rooting for LSU (at least until things get out of hand).
As someone who, by birth, is an Oregon State fan, Washington State is generally my best cultural proxy that has some life. It has been a good season for Washington State, and as Oregon State already has two wins and hasn’t lost to the Ducks yet, the season could turn out ok by traditional OSU standards.
