...demons don’t usually act like a snowflake who thinks he can intimidate someone escallating erratic behavior and making voices... Perhaps movies and 19th century literature are somewhat unreliable sources for describing how a demon-possessed individual might behave. Assuming that one believes in such things of course.

I think a good, stout walking stick is a reasonable non-lethal force alternative. Keep the handgun as a backup.
Applied to the knees or outer thigh it is hard for the defender to deflect. And such low targetting is unexpected.
