ALCS Game 5: Red Sox headed to World Series thanks to unlikely hero David Price

HOUSTON – David Price picked the perfect time to book his first career playoff win as a starting pitcher. It sent the Boston Red Sox to the World Series. Arguably the worst postseason starter in baseball history, Price shut out a flat Houston Astros team for six innings Thursday night en route to a 4-1 victory in a pennant-clinching Game 5 of the American League Championship Series. The Red Sox, who won a franchise-record 108 games during the regular season, will host the winner of the Los Angeles Dodgers-Milwaukee Brewers National League Championship Series in Game 1 of the World Series on Tuesday. The 33-year-old Price, working on three days’ rest, kept the Astros off-balance with an inside-and-outside, up-and-down command of the strike zone. He struck out nine, walked none and allowed three hits, with 65 of his 93 pitches going for strikes. His changeup, in particular, was devastatingly effective, inducing 11 swings and misses, including four for strikeouts. inal three outs to send Boston to its fourth World Series iHOUSTON – David Price picked the perfect time to book his first career playoff win as a starting pitcher. I don’t see LA nor Milwaukee beating Boston.

WOO HOO!!

I have to admit I'm stunned. I actually didn't think the Sox could get past the Yankees this season, much less the Astros.

David Price was spectacular tonight. Kudos to him, and to the entire team! :-)

I’m really happy for them and for a lot of good “stories” in the lives of this year’s team, such as for J.D. Martinez whose career might have been washed up when he was cut by the Astros a few years ago....

I am, too, but I'm a die-hard Red Sox fan. ;-)

The majority of the players on this Red Sox team are really humble guys. My husband and I have followed several of these players through the minor leagues, and have met some of them. Jackie Bradley Jr. (ALCS MVP!) and Brock Holt are particularly NICE decent guys.

I’m a Sox fan but honestly, I did not think they would get past the Astros. Our bullpen is nothing to brag about.

Yup. When I saw Kimbrel come out of the bullpen the past two nights, you don't want to know what I was screaming at the TV! I still can't believe Cora left Kimbrel in so long in yesterday's game, especially with Bregman coming up to bat. With the bases loaded. GRR!

FEAR THE BEER!

LOL! Miller Park is fantastic. Hubby and I went to a game there several years ago and had a great time... would love to return someday.

Reportedly Kimbrel just learned before Game 5 that he has been tipping his pitches in recent weeks, allowing batters to tee off on him (though all the walks still seem to me to be a big part of the problem, too). If this info is right and he has now corrected the problem then that bodes very well for the World Series:

As an 87 year old fan of 70+ years, I am absolutely thrilled!! I remember like it was yesterday attending a World Series playoff game in 1967-Red Sox against the Cardinals. Sat 3 rows behind first base and watched Geo Scott play first base, Lonberg pitch a no-hitter through 7 innings, Yaz and Conig in the outfield and the Hawk catching. Unfortunately, though they won that game, they went on to lose the series. Hope for better luck this year. Too old to attend games now, but never miss watching at home.

Yes indeed. Seems like most years in baseball the outcome rests on a couple plays. The Indians and dodgers would likely agree the past two years in the World Series.

You’re welcome. I followed the Yankees more 10-20 years ago. But I still follow them a bit.

LOL, I’m not a Cowboys fan either. :D

“Too old to attend games now, but never miss watching at home.”

Same here,but I’m just a kid-——only 86. :-)

Remember that wonderful night in 2004? I actually cried, and I’m not a crier.

T sure do remember. In fact, typical of my age group, I remember memorable plays of years ago better than plays a couple months ago. I actually did cry when Yaz ran the bases at the end of his last game before retirement. Much as I loved him, I thought he let his fans down by just disappearing instead of maybe doing some charitable work. He was so popular he could have been very effective.

Long-time fan of the Dodgers as well, but because of Machado I hope they don’t go to the World Series. This punk has a history of dirty play, going back to when he threw a bat at an A’s pitcher.

Sorry to mess with your memories but Tony C. didn’t get to play in the ‘67 WS. He went down in Aug. ‘67 and was out for the season and a lot more, with that terrible pitch to the head/eye. Ken “Hawk” Harrelson and Jose Tartabull split RF duties after Harrelson was acquired in an August trade. Elston Howard was also acquired via trade down the stretch and did a lot of the catching.

What a year that was. Yaz, Lonborg & co. were tremendous. Triple Crown and MVP for Yaz, Cy Young for Lonborg. The Cardinal were a bit too much for them in the WS with Bob Gibson dominating 3 games, but still, it was a terrific season.

Guess this old mind is a little confused. I do remember Tony getting hit in the eye. It was a late night game on the west coast-right? I believe I was watching alone as everybody else went to bed. Guess I need to dig out my souveneir program from that Sox-Cardinal game to refresh my memory.

Like Kavanough”s detractor, I can’t remember where or when, but that year I attended a celebratory dinner where all the players mingled with the guests and I purchased a baseball signed by the players which I still have.

Interesting... thanks.

After the Game 4 near-disaster with Kimbrel, Pedro Martinez (on the TBS post-game show) kept saying: "Kimbrel is hitting the target late".

I assume that's the specific spot in the center of the catcher's glove where he's aiming the ball?

Pedro Martinez has been sort of a pitching coach lately for the Red Sox... at least he was a few years ago.

Anyway... hope Kimbrel gets his stuff right before the World Series. He's been causing massive heart attacks throughout Red Sox Nation. :-/

Kimbrel's pre-pitch albatross-yoga pose cracks me up every time! Can't imagine what the batters are thinking at the plate. I find myself telling the batters, "don't look at it!"

LOL

LOL! That's kind of how the loud and crazy sports guys on Boston / New England sports radio WEEI described Kimbrel's antics. "What the hell IS that?? He looks like some weird bird about to take off!"

I don't know why he does that strange pose before *every* pitch. Maybe he's trying to get the batters to crack up laughing.

Did you see the Astros fans behind home plate mimicking Kimbrel's pose during Game 4? There was a big group of them doing it at one point. Hysterical! :-D
