In this state where I live...

I feel your pain.

Us conservatives here might say that we have secret handshakes and stuff, but being in an insult-target-rich environment, it is more fun to let people know you are a conservative in certain situations...:)

I will admit, that being a conservative up here in Massachusetts does have the occasional humorous moments… I was working on a project once, and the woman that I was working with was extremely liberal. But she was very nice, very reasonable, and extraordinarily intelligent. She and I worked together for several years, and had dinner together on many occasions.

We can talk politics, she listens to my point of view without interrupting me or getting contentious, and can respect my point of view because she recognizes I have thought about it logically and exposed it too much introspection. I don't do this with most Liberals.

I’m working with her in her office one day and this other woman walks in. She is clearly an Obama type of voter, probably in the borderline between the spittle-lipped leftist and the ones you can talk to. Since it was my project, I was allowed to set up the fake names of all the test patients that we were using. In this case, we happen to be using the names of states for last names, and my first test patient was named ALASKA, SARAH. As this other woman walked into the cubicle, she began railing about having to use a test patient named ALASKA, SARAH. She s can’t wait until we’re done with this testing, because I’m sick of looking at this woman’s name!” I calmly turned around and said to her in a level voice: “I like the name. And to be truthful, I would like to hear a lot more of it in the years ahead.”

This woman turned and looked at me, her mouth was open and there was a look of utter horror and astonishment on her face. She stammered out “You… you… you’re… you’re one of THEM!” I know that she thought very highly of me and had respect for me, but since I generally don’t make it a habit to walk around work and talk politics with people I don’t know well, she was appalled to find out that I was a conservative! I could just see the gears turning in her brain thinking “He’s such a nice guy! How could he be one of those evil conservatives?”
