It’s Time for Employees to Get Paid Leave to Vote
Fortune ^ | October 10, 2018 | Matt Cartwright and Tom Perez

Posted on 10/13/2018 6:53:00 PM PDT by mdittmar

On Nov. 6, Americans will vote in one of the most important elections in our lifetime. Companies and their employees have a significant stake in the outcome. But too many people still say they don’t vote because they are too busy or their schedule won’t allow it.

We’ve seen this before. In November 2016, about 40% of eligible voters did not cast a ballot. Some made a conscious decision not to go to the polls on Election Day. But many of these voters simply didn’t have a choice. Around half of states do not require employers to give employees paid leave to vote. And more than a third of states don’t require employers to allow their employees to take unpaid leave to vote.

Polls are generally open for at least 12 hours a day.

I have never had a problem voting before or after work. I don't remember ever having to take time off from work to vote. And I've voted in just about every election for over 30 years.

If voting is not important enough for a person to find a way to do it, they shouldn’t be voting.

I have always been allowed to vote and be paid. Don’t know about the rest of the country.

Most people manage to vote who want to vote. Weird. On their way to work, On their way home from work. They run out during lunch. Some times they go home, collect the wife, and they go vote together. All this has gone on since the dawn of the republic, and all with no help from Steyer.

The folks who don’t vote are not interested to vote, aren’t interested in the issues, and its OK that they don’t vote.

13 hours in Pennsylvania, 7 am to 8 pm. The workers must be in by 6 am to get things set up. They might get to go home an hour or so later after all the absentee votes are counted and the results posted. The judge puts in about another hour driving the results to the court house and turning in the supplies.

The Democrat Party would like for “voters” to register for a party, and then every candidate that part runs would get a vote from each voter who registered for the party. Automatically. No need even to have polling places...

If you really have that little time get an absentee ballot. It is far easier to vote early or absentee than it used to be.

One time I did because I was under a tight deadline at work and I didn't know if I would get home early enough. I had to sign swearing that I would be out of the county on election day. Well, I worked just over the county line so yes I was out of the county.

🐎💨💩 Uh, no. In Nevada, early voting starts on Oct 20th ncluding weekends and past quitting time/before start time. If that doesn't work, you ain't train' very damn hard. Your state may differ.

This is ridiculous.

People do not have take unpaid time off from work. Polls tend to be open from 8 am to 8 pm, so people can go and vote before or after work.

In some places, like California, you can also vote absentee, just for asking.
