Car Submerged in Mission Bay in Photo-Op Gone Wrong
Times of San Diego ^ | 10/3/2018

A car got submerged in the water Wednesday after the driver and his passenger tried to pose for a photo at the water’s edge of a boat ramp in Mission Bay, police said.

The incident happened around 12:20 p.m. Manuel Silla was in the parking lot when he saw the blue Subaru started to slip into the water and called 911.

“When I finished the call, the car was already drowned,” Manuel Silla said. “It through real quick. I don’t get it — why people were in the car when this is only for boat?”

The two men were injured and were able to swim out of the car and into shore, San Diego police Sgt. Cory Mapston said.

“They were very unfamiliar with how an actual boating ramp works and the dangers involved,” he said. “Their car ending up slipping into the water about 20 feet.”

It took a two-man lifeguard team to help tow the car out of the water. It was submerged in about six to eight feet of water.

It doesn’t appear that alcohol or drug were involved in the incident, Mapston said.

At least it was quick and the car didn't suffer.

“They were very unfamiliar with how an actual boating ramp works and the dangers involved,” he said. “Their car ending up slipping into the water about 20 feet.”

Apparently so.

It doesn’t appear that alcohol or drug were involved in the incident, Mapston said.

I find that hard to believe.

I’m amazed they had the wit to get the windows down before the car electrical system shorted... usually people drown in cars because they can’t get the windows down.

They were very unfamiliar with how an actual boating ramp works and the dangers involved,

Thanks to these dumb asses we will have boat ramp laws, warnings, guards, registration, safety courses, etc.

My son has been on summer staff for a couple years at a Christian camp in Michigan. At the end of the year, one of the guys drives the camp pickup down the beach and into the lake, then all the male staff climb on for their traditional photo.

Then they drive back on shore and get back to work.

In a pinch, you can check their voter registration card. Party designation is usually a good indication.

Wonder what the insurance company says about this intentionally stupid action by the car owner? And newer car, likely still paying for it.

Cars that get wet at the launch ramp usually have a boat and trailer attached. It can be a tricky situation, and I’ve seen marriages tested and broken in public.

I went ice fishing with a friend years ago and we drove out on the lake in his car. It was late in the season. After about thirty minutes, we happened to glance over and the car appeared lower in the ice. On closer look, we saw the vehicle was sinking through the ice. My friend ran over and opened the driver’s door, at first thinking to get in and move it. Then the car broke through the ice on that side and caught on the door, holding it up. My friend got an idea from this, and ran to the other side and opened the other door. That side, too, sank into the ice, catching on the door.

We both stood there for a moment looking at it, wondering what do do next. Suddenly, we heard a big screech, and watched as the doors bent upward like a DeLorean. With a big splash, the car broke completely through and in only a few seconds, it was gone. It went to the bottom, eighty feet down.

We still laugh about it to this day — and made sure after that, if it was late in the season, to snowshoe or ski out to the shanty.
