The Cars - Touch and Go (1980)

music *ping*
One of my favourite songs from The Cars.
Big fan of Hello Again, Magic, and Drive.
RIP Benjamin Orr. You are greatly missed.
listen to any cars song and you will hear the totally under rated Greg Hawkes on keyboard, sax, etx. . he was and is one of the best song accompanment composers ever. The guy had a youtube channel and is every bit as talented as you expect. every member of the cars was super talented. there were no filler members. Elliot easton on lead guitar graduated with a degree in music from berkley and he also has a few youtube interviews a really down to earth guy. and david robinson is a tempo machine!!
Those were some great songs. Plus “Who’s Gonna Take You Home?”. People have been after Rick Ocasek for years to perform, but he doesn’t perform. I think Ric has been ill for the last few years, plus he’s older, so the voice is likely able to do less. Perhaps the biggest reason may be that he doesn’t want to tarnish their legacy.
Very few groups have even one hit record, ever. Even fewer have a long string of hits, songs of various styles and approaches.
The old saying is sometimes you just can’t put lightening in a bottle the second time around. They were a band of their time.
Rick recently divorced his beautiful wife Paulina Porizkova after 28 years of marriage. Just maybe Rick is not all that ‘sick’ after all.
I graduated High School in 1977 and I can’t believe how young they look in that video. (Or how old I look today...)
Loved The Cars!!
The Cars never topped their first album. Every song a classic.
Yep.
I saw the Cars just before they became famous. They were doing a photo-shoot in Downtown Crossing (Boston) in the summer of 1978. That was just as their first single ("Just What I Needed") was starting to break nationally. There was a long defunct record store "Strawberries" there where they were signing records. When I first saw them, I thought they were the Ramones. Then as you say, it was one song after another from that album that got heavy airplay - at least in the Boston area. For me, "Candy-O" was right up there with their debut.
They were nothing special as a live band which is probably why they didn't last longer. By 1986, they were playing half empty arenas. But musically, they always had something special.
That Cars first album definitely helped put the final nail into disco era.
Everybody at my high school was listening to it, and that was before “My Best Friends Girl” started playing on the radio, it generated a lot of buzz.
Melody....fade...hiss...Cha-Chunk...hiss...rise...Melody...
And “My Sharona.” The Cars will always be my favorite band.
“Door to Door” is one of my favorite albums. It didn’t get much promotion and the band seemed uninterested in the rock and roll lifestyle that followed the commercial appeal of “Heartbeat City” and the attention generated from MTV. The members were, in some ways, the anti-rock star rock stars. Orr had such a fantastic voice; bleeping cancer.
“Panorama” didn’t offer much in radio airplay but I have enjoyed this album since its earlier days. Along with D2D, the two releases by the band I play most often even today.
As for "Door to Door" - should have been a much bigger hit and if it was, might have kept them together a few years longer.
