KRON4 Chief Meteorologist Lawrence Karnow says the formation is known as a "fallstreak hole" or "hole punch cloud."
The clouds form when there are water droplets that are colder than freezing but have yet to freeze, according to the National Weather Service.
These "supercooled" water droplets need a "reason" to freeze, which usually comes in the form of ice crystals, the NWS explains.
Planes passing through the cloud layer can bring these ice crystals.

Spend enough time outdoors watching the sky, and you’ll see this. It’s really not terribly rare.
Perhaps it’s caused by extreme amounts of exposed fecal matter?

Just watched the latest Avenger movie, so my imagine is running wild.

Given the state of California, how long till their Shaman start telling them to make sacrifices for the strange and awesome sky god.
This demonstrates that the “sky” as we know it to be, is but a slowly rotating Hologram. That absence of form in the middle is a simple matter of debris or Space Goo being stuck to the ‘projection machine’ thus blocking the image in that spot.
The issue will be resolved soon enough by “The Greys”.
