What defeated Mario the pius, was his remark that “the speed limit in NY would remain 55 mph for as long as I am governor”. All those commies driving up I87 to their summer homes in Lake George saw an opportunity to elect Pataki and get the speed limit restored to 65mph.
Cuomo would say that it was the death penalty (which Pataki also ran on). The death penalty does not benefit anyone on a daily basis. Raising the speed limit does. Hence, the commies from NYC held their noses to get the speed limit put back to normal.
