I’ll have to send it on to my son. He graduated MCRD SD Feb 2004.

I remember when he enlisted, our next-door neighbor asked him what he got for “guarantees”...

I said he is guaranteed to get a haircut!

I was in the Air Force, and when we rolled into Lackland AFB in San Antonio, TX, our TI greeted us with lattes and cookies. We had a leisurely stroll to our dorms, and he even let us sleep in the following morning.

In the afternoon we broke up into squads of four and played a round of golf at the base course.

Yup, USAF Basic Training was awful. I must have lost a dozen golf balls during basic training.

It was nowhere near that nice when my late father went through in 1943.

Some great comments on the youtube page.

Here’s one:
“Funny, part of me wants to make fun of some of those guys in this video, but you know what? They had the balls and courage to to be there at marine boot camp. Holy shit that says a lot. Good for them.”

MANY people will never understand this, thinking (such as) Kaepernick is a “hero”....

Live in San Diego and look with fond memories at MCRD when waiting for a flight. For me it was the next morning, that 430 wake up call, I can still hear that trashcan.
What fun days

My two best friends in the Corps were Hollywood Marines...needless to say we argued
endlessly about who had it worst in boot. One of my friends pointed out that there was no
worse torture than listening to the constant flights taking off from the near by airport and
knowing you were not going anywhere. I never admitted it at the time, but I now think he
was right. That would have driven me crazy.

Boot camp in 1985 Fort Dix was a lot different . You were dropped off at a huge building and did further processing , this took a few days before we were assigned to our groups . I went through during the winter months and it wasn’t all that bad . Quite a few didn’t make it through as they try to sift out the psychologically weak with little sleep and constant tasks . I am so glad I was a an American 91 Alpha (combat medic.) They have since changed the MOS but I’m sure these guys in now learn to appreciate hot water and a toilet .

My daughter is at Parris Island right now. According to my official Training Matrix, it’s Training Day 10, but it might be off because of Labor Day.
