Rained all yesterday and this morning in northern Idaho, and temps don't look like they're going to exceed about 70 Fahrenheit for two weeks or so, which is as far as the forecast goes. A very brief and for a couple weeks, intense summer appears to have dropped off the table and I'm seeing some yellow leaves already. Had to put a new filter into the furnace after all that smoke and I'll need some heat tonight. What happened?

No complaints here, though. Time to service the snow blower and give the mowers one last run before I empty them. I hope.

The name doesn’t ring a bell, but, hey, it was fifty years ago.

Paul Petzoldt came along, however, I can remember that.

But, jeez, I carried a fifty pound pack up the sides of mountains. Now I can’t even carry a bag of groceries up the stairs to my front door!

Ah, golden years of youth....

That’s funny. My sister used to live in Montana. They used to call the seasons Winter, almost winter and summer (which was super short).

My buddy took a group of hs kids backpacking up Granite Peak in Montana, in August.

A couple of kids didn’t have the “required” winter clothing.
But going against his better judgement, they went anyway.

On the way down from the summit, the weather turned.
It started to snow.
He picked up the pace to get to lower elevation,
But the snow got heavy, so he decided to set up camp.
Instead of setting 3 tents, they only set 2, so as to keep everybody closer together.

In the am, they went out to a foot of snow.

Their only saving grace was a winter jacket they had found at the summit, and some extra layers the some people had brought.
And people sharing gloves.

My buddy ALWAYS has a sense of humor about him, with a smirk almost always on his face.
His cousin who was with, said he knew they were in trouble when his cousin wasn’t smiling.

My buddy’s wife said that he slept for 2 days afterwards, he was so drained.
Not from the physical strain of the weather. That was old hat to him. Probably would have loved it had he been on his own.
(or at least had everyone properly prepared)

Still talks about it to this day, 15+ years later.
You can still see it in his eyes that that trip SCARED him.

Did Colorado Outward Bound School summer 1969.

It was crazy tough, even after NOLS. Our Instructor was a Green Beret just back from Vietnam.

In West Central FL, it’s been getting down to low-70s at night this August. It’s normally 8-10 degrees warmer.

You’ve given me memory flashes of those days long ago.

The instructor’s name at COBS was Ken Edsberg, just returned from Vietnam, Republic of.

He was a Hard Charger.

It’s also why there are virtually no reptiles in the Arctics but there are mammals and birds. And some of your tropics feature rather spring-like weather than summer. Go to the desert if you want true equatorial hell.

You cannot handle much more than 110 deg, which is only a few degrees above you body. You can’t strip beyond nude to help cool down, and only hope to use ice packs at that point but they won’t last.

But you can put on more layers to easily survive freezing, which is some 70 deg below your body temp.

Point being, we already survive low temps. But if it did actually keep creeping up in temp just 20 deg, you’d fry.

***high altitude snow to parts of Wyoming, Montana and Idaho. ***

Forty years ago things like early snow was proof we were entering a new Ice Age.

A friend of mine in La Pine OR lost his tomato plants yesterday after 2 consecutive hard frosts. He’s at 4500’ or so.

The ICE AGE cometh! It’s caused by combustion engine exhaust reflecting sun warmth into space.

2 weeks ago we were finishing up a month of near hundred degree days, including 2 weeks around 102 to 104.

The West needs the water, so thanks to God for the early snow. Plus it outs out fires.
