Aretha agreed and then she came in and she listened to the tracks and she said, “I'd like to change the piano.” I said, “Of course, who would you like?” She said, “I’ll do it.” So she sat down at the piano with the mic and, with her back to us, started playing and singing. Her piano playing actually made a difference. It was more soulful.

I think that scene helped more than anything to rekindle her career and introduce her to a new generation.

To her husband, Matt "Guitar" Murphy:

"The BLUES Brothers? Shee-it. They still owe you money, fool."

Many forget she was a pretty darn good pianist.

Just like many forget how good of a piano player Nat King Cole was.

Mrs. Murphy: “Help you two?
Elwood: Do you have any white bread ma’am?
Mrs. Murphy: Yeah.
Elwood: I’ll have some toasted white bread please.
Mrs. Murphy: You want butter or jam on that, honey?
Elwood: No ma’am, dry.
Jake: Do you have any fried chicken ma’am?
Mrs. Murphy: Best damned chicken in the state.
Jake: Bring me four fried chickens and a Coke.
Mrs. Murphy: You want chicken wings or chicken legs?
Jake: Four fried chickens and a Coke.
Elwood: And some dry white toast please.
Mrs. Murphy: Ya’all want anything to drink with that?
Elwood: No ma’am.
Jake: A Coke.
Mrs. Murphy: Be right back.”

Yes. I saw her perform and loved the times she played and sang. Powerful. Would have loved to have seen Nat King Cole perform at the keys. :D

The production of the Aretha segment was inspired......

It was a kick when the diners got up and stated line dancing with her.

One of them was her sister-—who backed up her concert performances as well.

And the guy who played her “man” was perfect.

Was he her husband? I had no idea. That makes a great scene ever greater.

I just linked to that scene which begins with awesome John Lee Hooker and shots of Chicago market place - a famous street that I don’t remember the name of.

Aretha was the soundtrack to my life in the mid ‘80’s. I met my husband at a glitzy nightclub in Minneapolis that had a big band that did Aretha covers to the ninth. RIP Rupert’s American Nightclub. We wore dresses and heals and the best fur coat we could afford (or fake) LOL

RESPECT helped my best friend at the time recover from a bad breakup. Interesting times in the 80’s....

The production of the Aretha segment was inspired......

Inspired it must be!
How do they dream up three singers/dancers to work with her, a small, medium and a large?

Also IMO, something comes across when the actors are enjoying the work, and it shows here.
