There is a reason for it. If they want to sound credible they must explain how the ice ages ended. And if they want to sound consistent it has to be blamed on CO2. There's no other way. That's their whole premise. So how do you explain CO2 in an era before before fossil fuels ? Blame some BS phenomena that happened hundreds or thousands of years ago in an obscure ocean in a far corner of the world and which can never be proved.
