Democrats unveil four gun proposals ahead of next session (New Mexico)
The Albuquerque Journal ^ | August 7, 2018 | Dan McKay

Posted on 08/08/2018 11:49:26 AM PDT by CedarDave

Democratic lawmakers say they will pursue a number of new restrictions on firearms in the next legislative session – including a “red flag” law that would allow family members or police officers to seek a court order to take guns from someone they believe is an immediate threat.

Also on tap are proposals that would require background checks for all firearm sales, order domestic abusers to give up their guns and impose new regulations aimed at keeping guns from children.

The ideas surfaced in an all-day legislative hearing at the University of New Mexico – where a panel of lawmakers heard from police officers, gun owners and high school students. Supporters and opponents alike turned out.

Here’s a look at the proposals mentioned Tuesday:

• Sen. Richard Martinez, an Española Democrat and chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, said he will introduce a slimmed-down background check proposal, a successor of sorts to more complex legislation that died in 2017. The proposal would require background checks on every sale of a firearm.

• Rep. Deborah Armstrong, D-Albuquerque, said she will propose legislation directing judges to order domestic abusers to surrender their firearms while a restraining order is in effect.

• Rep. Daymon Ely, D-Corrales, said he is working on a red-flag law that would allow household members or law enforcement to seek a court order to temporarily take the guns of someone they believe is an immediate threat to themselves or others.

• Two New Mexico teenagers, Sophia Lussiez and Julia Mazal, also made a presentation, asking legislators to pass a law that would make gun owners liable if they fail to secure their weapons, allowing access to children. They are working with Rep. Linda Trujillo, D-Santa Fe, on a proposal for the next session.

Not mentioned in this article but lurking in earlier stories, are new laws controlling semi-automatics like AR-15's and similar weapons. Dems say they are only for killing people.

The Dems control and very likely will remain in control of the legislature. There is a very good chance that the Governor's office will switch from Pub to Dem this fall. Not all Dems favor gun control, but will likely go along with the left-wing libs in charge of the chambers. Better strongly support the Republican candidate for Governor, Steve Pearce, to avoid California-like gun legislation.

a court order to take guns from someone they believe is an immediate threat

I remember when it used to be called a 'trial' and involved formal charges and the presumption of innocence and the burden of proof.

high school students

Is there anything they don't know? Actually, there is. Especially on the topic of firearms.

Related ABQ Journal Story:

Kelly, Giffords talk guns with NM students
(Excerpted)

Mark Kelly, retired astronaut and commander of the final flight of the space shuttle Endeavour, asked a simple question: “How many of you know somebody who has been shot?” All nine New Mexico students in the room raised their hands.

That interaction was part of a roundtable on gun violence prevention Tuesday at the University of New Mexico’s Domenici Center for Health Science with Kelly and his wife, former U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords of Arizona. Giffords was one of 13 people wounded at a “Congress on Your Corner” event at a Tucson grocery store on Jan. 8, 2011. ...

Student leaders from Albuquerque, Rio Rancho, Santa Fe and Santo Domingo Pueblo representing New Mexicans to Prevent Gun Violence, March for Our Lives and Mayor Tim Keller’s Youth Advisory Council attended the roundtable after testifying earlier at a hearing of the New Mexico Legislature’s Courts, Corrections and Justice Committee.

“I’ve done this a number of times … in Australia and the UK. Here in the United States, it’s about half, and if you live in a state like New Mexico, which has high gun violence compared to other states, that’s why all of you want to put your hands up, which is remarkable and really unfortunate.”

Kelly and Giffords assured the students they have a voice and a role to play in producing change by engaging in the community and voting throughout their adult lives.

“These are scary times,” Giffords told the teens. “Racism, sexism, lies, violence. It’s time to stand up for what’s right. It’s time for courage. We must stop gun violence – protect our children, our future – let them lead the way. Make our country a safer place, a better place. Do you have the courage to fight? Stand with me. Vote, vote. On Election Day, your voice matters.”

Proposals talked about in the last legislature. Likely to be re-packaged for the new 60-day session in January.

“Mark Kelly, retired astronaut and commander of the final flight of the space shuttle Endeavour..”

Too bad this asshole didn’t have a Gus Grissom/Apollo 1 type accident. What a busybody pain in the ass.

Haven't heard new scuttlebutt, but the Dem candidate for Governor, Michelle Lujan-Grisham, has stated on record, she'd sign a ban on AR-15s (and likely similar weapons) if she was presented such.

Actually, all three Dem candidates said the same thing prior to the primary in June.

We don't have a gun problem in America. We have a diversity problem. Lily white states like Vermont and New Hampshire don't have gun problems.

The only locales in the USA with "gun problems" are locales with a lot of "diversity", states with a "multi-hued tapestry of diversity". Evidently some races are unable to handle weapons responsibly. Compare say, McLean County, Illinois to Chicago.

This is our fault, not theirs. We allow these criminal, anti-American leftist liberal scum to continue walking the face of the earth. As long as that happens, we will be under attack. Typical of the right, though. Under constant attack, and we don’t do a damned thing about it.

I figured you’d be the poster when I saw the headline. And, does the downward spiral continue? Sad damn situation for a state I love. Can’t do the politics there. And NV is not getting any better these days. WTH?

“WTH?”

It’s liberals flooding into Sante Fe from all over, but primarily California. Couple with a native population that has been destroyed by government programs, it’s a solid liberal voting base.

My wife and I love Ruidoso. She’s Mescalero Apache, and it’s literally her home and family. But I’ve got a ranch in Central Texas that is looking better and better.

It is ironic that most school shooters are deranged, mentally unstable and espouse leftism. The liberal mind is essentially that of a high school student. So now we have to shred the Constitution and allow children to “solve” problems in our society that they are responsible for?

Sad. Abq and its voting bloc control the state. ( Used to love Ruidoso.) Like Vegas controls NV with increasing help from Reno as well these days. Some of us keep fighting but........

Darn. Was considering moving to Albuquerque (fleeing from insane Colorado). Guess that New Mexico is off the list.
