End of the Olympic dream: Haunting images show abandoned venues a decade after the Beijing games
UK Daily Mail ^ | August 6, 2018 | Kelsey Cheng

As the 10th anniversary of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games approaches, its legacy remains unmistakable from the smallest alleyways in the Chinese capital to the country's growing clout abroad.

However, since the high of the capital's enthusiasm for the Games, many of the venues built for the lavish event have fallen into disrepair, leaving them unloved and abandoned.

Logos bearing 'Beijing 2008' were left rusting at the deserted beach volleyball stadium in the city centre and broken statues of the Olympic mascots were left lying among trees behind unfinished buildings.

The same thing happened to the World’s Fair sites.

I have long thought Olympic host cities and World Fairs would be a great opportunity to revitalize areas.

If a city is going to host either, they should have a long term plan to build enough quality venues to spur development after the events are over.

Not every venue has to be cheap 'world class' short use projects. Offer real businesses the opportunity to build for the future. If done right, it's a good way to improve infrastructure for the long term.

Instead they 'invest' is cheap, one-time use projects that are left to decay.

Multiple pictures of the same venues, designed to convince you that all the Olympic structures are shattered ruins. Interesting but misleading. Could even be considered fake news.

Total waste, if people wan the Olympics then buy a few thousand acres in The Canadian wilderness a bus ride from an airport (or build one)and build stadiums and build stadiums and dorms - people can be bused in and out in the am and pm. All willing participating countries can contribute to the costs and maintenance

This is why the US cities should continue to refuse to bid on the games.

In the Keynesian world of “aggregate demand” all spending is good, no matter how wasteful, because it puts money into the economy

Good point! It sure seems like an enormous waste of money to be spent for an event that lasts a couple of weeks.

Just put up a bunch of tents and porta-potties.
No reason to build a city if it's not meant to be permanent.

I think the Olympics should rotate between 3-4 different venues so there is a reason for upkeep of those facilities.

Lake Placid NY is still making mega-$$$ from the Winter Olympics they had there back in 1980. Best thing to happen to that area.

The Olympics should be permanently in Greece.
One of the Greek islands should be kitted out as the permanent summer Olympics site. When the Olympics aren’t there it can be a resort.

Same thing is happening down in Rio.

True, but this ten years after the events.
Rio was turning into crap before the start of the events.
