Hurricane Hector became a Category 4 storm for a few hours early Sunday but then dipped back to Category 3, still a dangerous force, as it headed across the Pacific, threatening to hit Hawaii's Big Island and possibly its active volcano, officials said early Sunday. Hector's winds dropped to 125 mph from 130 mph, the diving line between Categories 3 and 4, early Sunday as it moved westward at 12 mph Sunday, the National Hurricane Center said in an advisory.

Scientists differ over how hurricanes and volcanoes might interact, including the question of whether low atmospheric pressure could help trigger an eruptionOops. No 90% consensus. Sorry, no "science" here yet. We need more payments to one side or the other.

I’m pretty sure the volcano cares not one wit about a hurricane. It would be like a fight between Mike Tyson and a four year old.

Im pretty sure the volcano cares not one wit about a hurricane. It would be like a fight between Mike Tyson and a four year old. Precisely.
A hurricane is a -surface- (atmospheric) disturbance. It can do tremendous damage -- to the surface -- for a day or two (any one location, like the Big Island).
A volcano is an outpouring of the -interior- of the earth. It can go on indefinitely -- this one has been going on continuously for months. A volcano taps an unimaginably huge reservoir of magma. There's simply no comparison in the amount of energy available.
The water in the storm may cool the surface of the most recent lava flows but it won't stop anything -- the lava laughs at puny hurricanes.

How about rain on hot lava? That should make for interesting explosions.

I don’t think the volcano is making plans to evacuate. I’m sure he will shelter-in-place.
