Speaking of letting a good one get away, "Surf City" was written by Brian Wilson of The Beach Boys but he gave the song to Jan & Dean. This was before The Beach Boys got really famous.

The rest of the band was really pissed with Brian over that however! That would have been a guaranteed number one song for them.

I will probably do a thread sometime on surf music in general. That represents a time when America was really great. Imagine being in Malibu Beach, CA in 1961!

That is my neck of the woods as well. Back in the late 60’s we used to head out to the Mentor and Chesterland Hullabaloos. The James Gang and the Chior were the house bands.

Thanks for turning me on to Rick Beato. That will occupy a few hours of my time!

I roller skated past your door at daylight.

Had forgotten this little gem of music.

She played Woodstock I believe.

She played Woodstock I believe.

Yes indeed she did. Here's a video: More Melanie at Woodstock.

She really had a unique voice and stage presence. A perfect balance of passion and innocence, intensity and childlike lightness.

I think she was basically a well-balanced young woman who liked music and performing, but also kept her eye on the ball and her feet on the ground, wanted a home and family, found a nice, responsible guy who worked in the music biz and made her talent into a family business with him.

I respect that a lot. I think she must be a cool person.

If she had been more off-the-wall crazy, she might have been another Janice Joplin, with that voice of hers.

According to information that turns up in a Google search, she identifies herself as a libertarian, and stayed married to her record-producer husband until he passed away in 2010, 41 years after they were married. They had three children, all of whom seemed to have turned out well.

I think the bands I mentioned were prior to making a big name for themselves. Both of them had roots in the North East. It wasn’t like the place they were playing in were big name venues or they were getting a lot of publicity. I was a paperboy at the time for the Asbury Part Press and since I handled the paper every day knew about most of the big news and this wasn’t big news it was just a bar band.

I like to surf discographies on Wikipedia and see all the chart entries for a particular artist. Then I can go to YouTube and hear the song - for free!

That's what I do, too. Another site that I like is Rate Your Music, which provides customizable song charts from 1900 to the present. For example, you can look up the top 1,000 hit singles from 1956. You can search by genre, nationality, etc.
